Travis Head has addressed speculation about becoming Australia’s next Test captain recently. The 32-year-old said he isn’t actively chasing the permanent role at all. Travis Head breaks silence on the topic by clarifying his approach hasn’t really changed over time.

He currently serves as Test co-vice-captain alongside Steve Smith in the setup. Head said he’s happy supporting Pat Cummins and Smith as they are both doing excellent jobs. He doesn’t feel leadership requires an official title or conducting the coin toss.

His Growing Leadership Experience Elsewhere

Head has previously captained Australia during T20I matches on several occasions. He led the side during the 2026 T20 World Cup campaign too. He’s also captained South Australia in Sheffield Shield cricket domestically before.

These experiences show he’s genuinely comfortable with leadership responsibilities when needed. Still, Australia’s captaincy currently remains firmly with Cummins for the foreseeable future.

A Record-Breaking Award-Winning Season

Head’s comments came shortly after winning his second consecutive Allan Border Medal. He received 153 votes, edging out Alex Carey by just one vote. Mitchell Starc finished third with 150 votes in that same voting period.

Head became only the fifth Australian to win the award back-to-back. He joins an elite list including Ponting, Watson, Clarke, and Warner. During that voting window, he scored 1,437 international runs across 30 matches.

Standout Performances Behind the Award

Head’s standout knocks included centuries in Perth, Adelaide, and Sydney recently. During the Ashes series, he scored 629 runs at a brilliant strike rate. That tally included three centuries across the home series against England.

As an opener, Head has scored 929 Test runs at an average above 58. He also smashed 142 in an ODI against South Africa at Mackay recently. Head now turns his focus to Australia’s Test series against Bangladesh soon.
