New Delhi: Tensions around the Strait of Hormuz appear to be escalating once again. Reports emerged on Sunday that a massive fire broke out on an oil tanker off the coast of Oman. It is claimed that anti-ship cruise missiles fired from the southern Iranian port of Sirik hit the tanker, causing a large plume of fire and smoke to appear in the sea. Independent confirmation of this incident is currently limited.
High flames erupt in the sea
The incident reportedly occurred near the Kumzar area of Oman’s Musandam Peninsula, where the crucial sea route through the Strait of Hormuz begins. According to reports, the tanker caught fire and flames were visible for a long distance, lighting up the night sky with an orange-red glow. Some videos of the incident have also surfaced on social media. However, these videos and all information to the attack require independent verification.
Maritime Threat in Hormuz Serious
Commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz is already severely affected. The UK’s UKMTO and the Joint Maritime Information Centre have advised ships in the area to remain vigilant. Official reports have previously documented incidents of projectile attacks and drone damage on tankers.
Warnings have also been issued regarding potential sea mines and other threats in the region. Consequently, many ships are using alternative routes through Oman instead of their normal routes.
Pressure on Oil Supply May Increase
Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy routes. Escalating tensions there could directly impact oil and gas supplies. According to recent reports, shipping through the Strait has significantly decreased compared to normal levels. Any new attack or tanker fire could further increase pressure on international markets and maritime trade.
