Health Desk. The liver is one of the body’s most vital organs. It plays a crucial role in processing nutrients from food, removing harmful substances from the body, and producing many essential chemicals. A liver problem doesn’t always have obvious symptoms at first. However, as the disease progresses, the body can give some indications.
1. Yellowing of the Eyes and Skin
If the whites of the eyes or skin appear yellower than normal, it should not be ignored. This is called jaundice. Some liver or biliary problems can cause increased levels of bilirubin in the body, causing yellowing of the skin and eyes.
2. Constant Fatigue and Weakness
Feeling constantly tired without much exertion can also be a sign of a physical problem. Some people with liver disease may experience weakness, lack of energy, and increased fatigue even with normal tasks. If fatigue persists for a long time despite adequate sleep and rest, don’t dismiss it as simply work pressure. It’s best to consult a doctor and get the necessary tests done.
3. Abdominal Swelling or Discomfort
In severe liver disease, fluid accumulation in the abdomen can cause bloating or swelling. This is called ascites. Pain or heaviness in the upper right abdomen can also be felt in some liver- problems. If abdominal swelling continues to increase or is accompanied by pain and difficulty breathing, seek medical advice immediately.
4. Dark Urine
The normal color of urine can range from light yellow to dark yellow, depending on the amount of water it contains. However, if the urine consistently appears very dark or brown, despite drinking adequate water, and is accompanied by yellowing of the eyes or skin, it could be a sign of a liver or biliary problem.
5. Itchy Skin and Easy Bruising
Some liver diseases can cause persistent itching throughout the body. Additionally, serious liver problems can affect blood clotting, causing some people to bruise more easily or bleed more frequently. If you experience repeated bruises without an obvious cause or excessive bleeding from even minor injuries, medical attention is necessary.
