Mbeumo came to Manchester United’s rescue, but Mason Mount suffered another injury setback as the Premier League side played out an eventful 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg. While Bryan Mbeumo supplied the attacking spark that helped his team claim a thoroughly deserved result, Michael Carrick will now be concerned about the condition of Mount as well as experienced goalkeeper Tom Heaton, who picked up a hamstring problem and had to go off.

Mixed emotions for Carrick in Sweden

Manchester United were given a serious examination by European champions Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg on Saturday, turning in a display that showed tactical encouragement but was also hit by frustrating injury problems. The English side made a poor start when Ibrahim Mbaye arrived unmarked at the far post to turn in a low delivery and hand the French champions an early lead.

Head coach Carrick stayed largely loyal to the team that beat Atletico Madrid last weekend, making only one alteration as Noussair Mazraoui came in for Leny Yoro. But the plan was soon thrown off course by a worrying moment that United supporters have seen too often.

Mbeumo shines as Amad leads the fightback

Even after the early blow of losing Mount, who had to be taken off after only 20 minutes with what appeared to be a problem in his left foot, United managed to work their way back into the contest through the tireless work of Amad Diallo. The young wide man was the standout player of the evening, swinging the momentum by winning possession high up the pitch and launching a quick counter. Amad’s persistence created the opening for Mbeumo, who finished with real class to bring the scores level.

Matvey Safonov was fortunate not to be sent off after a contentious moment in which he crashed into Joshua Zirkzee well outside his penalty area. The PSG goalkeeper avoided punishment, much to the frustration of the crowd in Sweden, who loudly jeered him every time he touched the ball afterwards.

Tielemans and Fernandes add energy after the break

The second half brought the much-awaited debut of Youri Tielemans, who entered from the bench to play his first minutes in a Manchester United shirt. The Belgium international looked at ease in midfield and quickly developed an encouraging link-up with captain Bruno Fernandes, who also came on to make his first appearance of pre-season.

Paris Saint-Germain were missing several of their main French stars, including Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue and Bradley Barcola, but their defensive organisation remained solid under late Manchester United pressure. The arrival of Fernandes and Tielemans clearly improved United’s ability to keep the ball, offering supporters an early look at what could become a fresh midfield combination.

Carrick takes the positives despite injury concerns

Looking back on the match, Carrick preferred to focus on the overall progress shown by his squad despite the blows involving Mount and Heaton. Speaking to MUTV after the final whistle, the United manager underlined the benefit of coming up against a side with PSG’s distinctive tactical style. “I enjoyed it,” he said. “Good challenge. Slightly different with the way they play. We should've scored more goals.”

Carrick also praised the mentality of his players, saying the demands of the game offered ideal preparation for the season ahead. “It's good for the boys sometimes to have to problem solve and find their own way and I thought we did that,” he added. “That prepares them for the season as well.”
