Jorge Messi, who also served as Lionel Messi’s agent throughout much of his son’s career, has died at the age of 68, Newell’s Old Boys have confirmed.
He is reported to have passed away in Rosario on Friday night after a long illness. Jorge Messi was a hugely important presence during Lionel Messi’s early years in football and remained a key figure behind the scenes as his son rose to the top of the game.
In a statement, Newell’s Old Boys said: “Jorge was the support and the person who sustained, with vision, rigour and affection, the career of the greatest player of all time together with his wife, Celia Cuccittini.
“His constant presence and leadership behind the scenes were fundamental in supporting every step Lionel took, from his beginnings in Malvinas to the greatest glory in world football.
“The Board of Directors, members, athletes and the entire leproso family send their affection to Celia, Lionel, Rodrigo, Matias and Maria Sol, and to all their loved ones and relatives, at this difficult time.”
The Messi family had released a statement during the World Cup saying that Jorge Messi had been “under medical monitoring, recovering and evolving favourably within the condition he presents.”
