While the entire country celebrates India’s Independence Day on August 15, the main official independence celebration in the Union Territory of Puducherry (formerly known as Pondicherry) is held on August 16. This may seem strange at first glance, but there is a deep historical and political reason behind it, which makes this beautiful coastal city different and unique from the rest of India.
The historical truth of August 15, 1947 and Puducherry
When India gained independence from the British on August 15, 1947, Puducherry and its surrounding areas (Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam) were not under British rule, but under French rule. France retained control of these territories even after the departure of the British East India Company and the British Crown. Therefore, while the rest of India celebrated its independence in 1947, the people of Puducherry continued to live under French colonial rule.
Why is ‘De Jure’ Transfer Day celebrated on August 16?
The people of Puducherry fought a long struggle to gain independence from French rule. Finally, on November 1, 1954, the French government handed over de facto control of Puducherry to the Indian government. For this reason, November 1 is celebrated as Liberation Day in Puducherry.
However, de jure the transfer was incomplete until the French Parliament approved the treaty. The French Parliament finally officially passed the Treaty of Cession on August 16, 1962.
For this reason, Puducherry legally became an integral part of India on August 16, 1962. Since then, August 16 is celebrated annually in Puducherry with great fanfare as De Jure Transfer Day, or legal independence day. On this day, there is a public holiday, flag hoisting, and cultural events are organized.
The confluence of both 15th August and 16th August
The citizens of Puducherry participate in India’s main Independence Day celebrations on August 15 as a mark of nationalism, but their own historical and legal Independence Day is celebrated on August 16. Rich in French architecture, beautiful beaches, and unique culture, the city is a living example of India’s diversity and unique history.
