Liverpool are reportedly considering a surprise summer move to take England World Cup breakout performer Djed Spence to Anfield. The Tottenham defender has seen his reputation soar after a string of commanding displays in North America, leading the Reds to look at him as a major option to strengthen their defence.

Andoni Iraola is said to be searching the market for new additions to reinforce his backline, and according to The Sun, Spence has become one of the main names on Liverpool’s shortlist. After a turbulent spell in north London that included loan moves to Rennes, Leeds United and Genoa, the 25-year-old finally hit top form at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the closing stages of the 2025-26 season.

Liverpool are now keeping a close watch on developments and are prepared to move if the right opening presents itself before the transfer window closes. The Reds are expected to face strong competition for his signature, although the opportunity to play under Iraola could be an important factor.

Even after his impressive performances on the international stage, Spence’s long-term future at Tottenham is still unclear under Roberto De Zerbi. The report states that the Italian manager sees Pedro Porro and Andy Robertson as his first-choice full-back options, which could open the way for Spence to leave. Even so, Spurs are not willing to part with him for a low fee, particularly after his market value climbed during the summer.

The full-back signed a new contract last August that keeps him at the club until June 2028, putting Tottenham in a strong position in negotiations. It is claimed Spurs are 'open' to selling Spence and would be willing to strike a deal if they receive an acceptable bid of around £35 million.

Liverpool’s interest is being complicated further by firm attention from Italy, especially from Inter in Milan. The England international has been marked out by Inter as a priority target to improve the full-back department after his displays on the world stage. The Nerazzurri are eager to secure a long-term successor to Denzel Dumfries, who recently left for Real Madrid, and they believe Spence would be an ideal fit for Cristian Chivu’s system.

The Italian club have already spoken with the player’s representatives and are reportedly ready to raise their initial budget in order to fend off competition from Anfield. Inter chiefs, including Beppe Marotta and Piero Ausilio, are worried that his rising profile could push his valuation even higher.

With the new Premier League season nearing, Spence was given extra time off after helping England finish third at the World Cup. The defender did not take part in Tottenham’s pre-season tour of New Zealand and Australia, missing games against teams such as Auckland FC and Sydney FC.

The player is reportedly attracted by the possibility of returning to Italy, where he previously had a successful spell with Genoa, though the appeal of a club like Liverpool is also a major consideration. With the transfer deadline drawing near, the battle for one of England’s most improved players is intensifying.
