Manchester United are aiming to beat the market with lower-cost additions this summer.

Manchester United are set to change tack, with another more affordable central midfield option now under consideration as part of Michael Carrick's rebuild.

The Red Devils have found several major deals too expensive in this transfer window, with players such as Youri Tielemans being preferred over Matheus Fernandes as Carrick sought to strengthen the squad before the club's return to the Premier League.

With further depth still required, Manchester United have now turned their attention to Giorgio Scalvini, according to The Telegraph.

United are attempting to keep spending under control this summer. Players such as Eduardo Camavinga have been linked with a move, but United have already signed Tielemans and Andrey Santos, both for less than £50 million.

Now, Atalanta star Scalvini is believed to be a target for around £32m - due in part to an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The Italian was valued at about €60m at the beginning of 2024, with clubs such as Chelsea and Inter Milan rivaling United for his signature. But after an ACL injury ruled him out of Euro 2024, Scalvini's market value has fallen sharply.

The Express reports that the 22-year-old is now worth £32m, which could make him a major bargain given that he was regarded as one of Italian football's brightest hopes only a few years ago.

Scalvini could, interestingly, offer an option not only in defence but also in midfield.

The Italian is capable of operating in midfield, and his tall build along with his ability to cover ground has drawn comparisons with Declan Rice in that role. That suggests he could develop into a more defensively minded presence alongside Tielemans or Kobbie Mainoo.

Scalvini made only eight appearances in the season after his injury, but he went on to register 30 matches in all competitions last term as he worked his way back to his best form.

With United also considering what could be a costly move for Newcastle United's Lewis Hall, cheaper signings in other areas may help finance a broader rebuild.

Another forward may also be pursued, along with a right-back.

Transfermarkt values Scalvini at €38m. United begin the Premier League season against Hull City on the opening day.
