Ireland’s hopes of earning direct qualification for the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027 suffered a major setback after the opening ODI against Afghanistan at Bready was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to persistent rain. The washout has ended Ireland’s slim chances of climbing into the automatic qualification places before the ICC’s September 30 rankings cut-off, meaning they must now take the longer route through the World Cup Qualifier.

Heading into the series, Ireland needed a perfect 5-0 sweep over Afghanistan while also relying on favourable results of other teams, including West Indies losing both of their remaining ODIs against India. The abandoned first ODI has made that scenario impossible, confirming that Ireland can no longer qualify directly for the ICC ODI World Cup.

Why Did Ireland Miss Out on Direct World Cup Qualification?

The Ireland national cricket team entered the Afghanistan series ranked 12th in the ICC Men’s ODI rankings. To finish inside the automatic qualification positions, they required maximum ranking points from the five-match series.

With only four matches in hand, even victories in all of the remaining ODIs would not generate enough rating points to overtake Afghanistan and other teams ahead of the September 30 deadline. As a result, Ireland will now shift their focus to the World Cup qualifying tournament.

How Does the 2027 ODI World Cup Qualification System Work?

The 2027 ODI World Cup Qualifier will feature 10 teams. It will include the two lowest-ranked Full Member nations in the ICC ODI rankings (excluding hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe), the top four teams from ICC Cricket World Cup League 2, and four teams advancing from the World Cup Qualifier Playoff.

The revamped qualification format offers multiple routes into the expanded 14-team World Cup. The winner of the Qualifier will progress directly to the tournament’s main group stage.

Teams finishing second, third and fourth will move into a newly introduced Super Series, where they will compete for the final place in the main phase of the World Cup.
