The son of former Manchester United striker Mark Hughes died tragically from sudden adult death syndrome, an inquest has been told.

In June, Hughes shared the devastating news that his son Alex had passed away.

Alex, 38, was working at Grimsby Town as head of player recruitment at the time of his death. He had also previously worked with Manchester City, Fulham, AFC Fylde and Morecambe.

His playing career was short, with spells at Stockport and Wrexham, before he switched to analysis and joined Blackburn Rovers in 2007 as a performance analyst.

Alex’s funeral took place last month at St Peter’s Church in Prestbury, Cheshire.

Sir Alex Ferguson led the mourners as they paid tribute to Alex. Also present were Bryan Robson, Ryan Giggs, Mike Phelan and Martin Edwards.

Alex is survived by his wife Jess and their two children, Sebastian and Leonardo.

The inquest heard that Alex died after collapsing on the bedroom floor at his home. He was found by his sons on June 19.

His elder son performed CPR, but sadly attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. Cheshire Coroners Court was told that doctors established the cause of death as sudden adult death syndrome.

As noted by the Daily Mail, the condition usually affects young men, with around 800 cases recorded each year in England.

Area coroner Victoria Davies said, “A post-mortem report showed there was no signification result of toxicology. There was no alcohol or drugs or prescription drugs.”

“A cardiac pathology report showed sudden death with a normal heart. There were no other significant findings.”
