New Delhi: India should be worried as Bangladesh has become another Pakistan along its eastern boundary, Sajeeb Wazed, son of former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina said on Wednesday.
He claimed that Bangladesh had become a “failed state” and warned that the country’s deteriorating security situation could pose a long-term threat to India, as reported by News18.
Wazed alleged that Bangladesh was witnessing democratic backsliding, political exclusion and a collapse of law and order following the ouster of the Awami League government, while addressing the Foreign Correspondents Club of South Asia in New Delhi.
He delivered the opening remarks before Hasina addressed the gathering via video link.
“Bangladesh today is not a failing state. It is a failed state,” Wazed said, alleging there was “no human rights” and “no freedom of speech” in the country.
He further claimed that media organisations had come under pressure ahead of the event, alleging that intelligence agencies instructed major television channels and newspapers not to carry coverage of the programme or reports from international media.
“What should concern India most is Bangladesh has become another Pakistan on India’s eastern front,” he said.
Hundreds of convicted militants jailed during the Awami League’s tenure had been released, Wazed said, claiming that extremist organisations, including Hizb ut-Tahrir, were now operating openly in Bangladesh.
“In the future, the next set of terrorists globally are going to be coming from Bangladesh unless this is stopped now,” he said.
