Anthropic, an artificial intelligence (AI) company, has announced the expansion of its operations in India, stating that its Claude AI models will now be available via Amazon Bedrock’s Indian infrastructure. Consequently, Claude AI operations will run on servers located within India—a process known as "in-country inference." This arrangement will primarily benefit sectors that handle sensitive and confidential data, such as banking, government agencies, healthcare providers, and other regulated industries. Processing data on local servers ensures that the data remains within the country's borders, thereby simplifying compliance with data residency and legal requirements during the development of AI-based applications. Sandeep Dutta, President of AWS India, confirmed that Anthropic’s Claude models would now be available on AWS’s Indian infrastructure through Amazon Bedrock.
According to Anthropic, India has emerged as one of the world's largest markets for cloud services. The company notes that this reflects the growing demand for enterprise AI solutions hosted on local infrastructure. Anthropic also reported receiving the highest number of registrations for its cloud partner network from India. As part of this initiative, the company plans to train over 5,000 professionals through its partner network to build local AI expertise.
Irina Ghose, Managing Director of Anthropic in India, stated that local processing would make it easier for companies to scale up from small AI pilot projects to large-scale AI deployments. She outlined plans to expand the company's workforce in India, enhance Claude's support for Indian languages, and forge partnerships with local organizations and businesses. The company has also collaborated with the Data Security Council of India (DSCI), MOSIP, and OpenG2P on cybersecurity-related initiatives. According to Anthropic, the cloud is being utilized for AI-based security testing, helping organizations identify potential vulnerabilities, assess software security, and strengthen their cybersecurity posture.
Additionally, the cloud is being used in Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) projects. These projects facilitate the delivery of public services such as digital identity, payments, healthcare, and government services. Anthropic has also partnered with Karya to enhance cloud performance in Indian languages under the New Delhi Frontier AI Impact Commitments.
