The month of Sawan is considered the most sacred for worshipping Lord Shiva. This month is very dear to Lord Shiva, and it is a religious belief that worshipping Mahadev with devotion and regularly throughout this month fulfills desires and brings happiness and prosperity. Mondays in Sawan are especially highly valued.

On this day, offering water to the Shivalinga, offering Bel leaves, and chanting Shiva mantras are considered highly fruitful. Let us learn how to worship Lord Shiva in Sawan and which mantras are considered auspicious.

How to worship Lord Shiva in Sawan?

Wake up in the morning before Brahma Muhurta, or sunrise, bathe, and wear clean, light-colored clothes. Clean the place of worship thoroughly and take a vow to worship while remembering Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Afterward, light a lamp and incense in front of the Shivalinga or the idol of Lord Shiva.

Perform Jalabhishek of the Shivalinga

First, offer Ganga water or pure water to the Shivalinga. Following this, you can perform Panchamrit Abhishek with milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar, depending on your faith. Finally, perform the Abhisheka again with clean water. Religious belief holds that performing Jalabhishek in the month of Sawan pleases Lord Shiva quickly and fulfills the wishes of his devotees.

Offer these worship materials to Lord Shiva

After the Abhisheka, offer Belpatra, Datura, Aak flowers, white flowers, sandalwood, ashes, and seasonal fruits to the Shivalinga. When offering the Belpatra, ensure it is unbroken and its smooth surface is facing the Shivalinga. Worship materials offered with faith and devotion are considered especially significant.

Chant these mantras

Be sure to chant Lord Shiva’s mantras during worship. The simplest and most effective of these is the Panchakshari mantra.

Om Namah Shivaya.

Chanting the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is also considered highly auspicious for seeking health, longevity, and protection from troubles.

Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam.

Urvarukamiv Bandhanan Mrityormukshiya Ma’amritat॥

Shiva Aarti

After chanting the mantra, perform an aarti of Lord Shiva and pray for the happiness, peace, and prosperity of the family. If possible, also recite the Shiva Purana or listen to the Shiva Katha. Finally, offer Prasad and distribute it to everyone.
