Pooran's 58* Fires MI London to Seven-Wicket Win Over Sunrisers at the Kia Oval
Nicholas Pooran produced one of the innings of the Hundred season so far, striking an unbeaten 58 from just 22 balls to drive MI London to a seven-wicket victory over Sunrisers at the Kia Oval. The win was sealed with 16 balls remaining, as MI London chased down a target of 144 with a command that ultimately made the contest look one-sided — even though the path there had its complications.
Sunrisers Set 144; Carse Strikes Early in the Chase
Sunrisers posted 143, setting MI London a target of 144. The home side made an early push with the ball when Brydon Carse opened the bowling and immediately made his mark. In just the second over, Carse removed Will Jacks for 2, the ball angling into the stumps before seaming away and producing a top-edge to Benny Howell at cover. One ball later, Jason Roy — playing on his 36th birthday — was caught at slip by Mitchell Marsh for a duck, Carse generating enough pace and movement to find the outside edge. MI London were 8 for 2 inside the first 10 balls of the chase.
That brought Sam Curran and James Vince together, and both men set about steadying the innings. The pair accumulated carefully against tight bowling from Carse and Matthew Potts, with MI London reaching 33 for 2 after 30 balls. Vince found boundaries in back-to-back deliveries from Potts to show signs of intent, and Curran chipped in with a six off Abrar Ahmed to lift the run rate. Yet the partnership remained measured rather than explosive — 104 still required from 65 balls at the halfway mark of the innings.
Vince Falls; Pooran Takes Over
The second major setback came in the 45th ball of the chase. Nathan Ellis, returning to the attack, produced two testing deliveries that beat Vince's edge before a third — nipping in with pace off a length — took out off stump. Vince departed for 17 from 18 balls, leaving MI London at 51 for 3 with 93 still required.
Pooran walked in at that point and immediately shifted the tempo of the match. He reached his fifty in just 19 balls — the fastest fifty recorded for the franchise across all editions, including their previous incarnation as the Oval Invincibles. The manner in which he dismantled the Sunrisers attack was striking. Against Benny Howell, Pooran hit three consecutive scoring shots of 4, 6 and 4 — a fine-leg sweep, a straight launch over long on, and a leg-side flick — within the space of a single over. Against Dan Lawrence, he deposited a six that barely cleared the boundary rope but cleared it nonetheless. Against Abrar Ahmed, he struck two consecutive sixes — one swept high over square leg, the next slapped over long on.
Throughout this period, Sam Curran provided the ideal foil. Having survived the difficult early overs, Curran found his range and began playing with increasing authority. A six bludgeoned over straight midwicket off Abrar Ahmed took him to his fifty from 34 balls, and he followed that with a full-toss from Potts dispatched over wide long on for another maximum. The fifty partnership between Curran and Pooran arrived in just 23 deliveries.
The Finish
By the 80th ball of the innings, MI London needed just 11 from 20 balls. Ellis' final over yielded a boundary as Pooran tickled a full delivery around the corner to the fine-leg rope. Potts returned for the final five balls of his quota with the target in single figures, and Pooran ended the match in the manner it deserved — launching a drive beyond mid off's reach off the fourth ball of that over for four, completing a seven-wicket win with 16 balls unused.
Curran finished unbeaten on 60 from 39 balls, a knock that encompassed five fours and two sixes and contributed enormously to building the platform that Pooran then exploited. The fourth-wicket partnership between the two was worth approximately 93 runs from the point Pooran arrived, making it the decisive passage of play.
Pooran was named the Meerkat Match Hero for his 58 not out from 22 deliveries, an innings that included four fours and five sixes. For Sunrisers, Carse's 2 for 18 from 20 balls was the standout bowling effort — sharp, disciplined and responsible for the early pressure that made the first half of the chase uncomfortable. Ellis contributed 1 for 22 from his 20 balls, dismissing Vince at a critical moment. The spinners Abrar Ahmed, Benny Howell and Dan Lawrence combined for 0 for 67, unable to slow MI London once Pooran was in full flow.
Sunrisers, having made a strong start with the ball through Carse and Ellis, could not sustain that pressure once the lights came on at the Kia Oval and the ball began skidding on. A crowd of 20,540 watched on as the match slipped decisively away from them in the back half of the innings, and MI London opened their Hundred campaign with a convincing victory.
