The BCCI has officially named Auqib Nabi as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka.
Bumrah was ruled out after suffering discomfort in his left knee during rehabilitation, leaving Team India without their pace spearhead for a crucial series in the World Test Championship cycle. While replacing a bowler of Bumrah’s quality is never easy, the selectors have finally rewarded one of the most consistent performers in domestic cricket.
For Aquib Nabi, this is a well-deserved opportunity after years of outstanding performances in the Ranji Trophy.
Outstanding Domestic Performances Earn Reward
Auqib Nabi has been one of the best fast bowlers in Indian domestic cricket over the last two seasons.
In the previous Ranji Trophy season, he finished as the tournament’s highest wicket-taker and played a key role in Jammu & Kashmir’s historic campaign.
He picked up 66 wickets at an outstanding average of 13.25, one of the best bowling performances in recent Ranji Trophy history.
Across the last two Ranji Trophy seasons, Nabi has claimed more than 100 wickets at an exceptional average of 13.14. He has also registered eight five-wicket hauls, highlighting his consistency and ability to win matches with the red ball.
Despite those remarkable numbers, he had to wait for his maiden India call-up.
Selectors Finally Reward Consistency
Many believed Aquib Nabi deserved an opportunity much earlier. However, the selectors preferred bowlers such as Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar on previous occasions.
With Bumrah unavailable, the selectors have now backed domestic performances and handed Nabi his first chance in the Indian Test squad.
It is a significant moment in his career and a reward for maintaining exceptional consistency over multiple domestic seasons.
Can Auqib Nabi Make an Immediate Impact?
Replacing Jasprit Bumrah is one of the toughest jobs in world cricket, and no fast bowler can replicate the impact Bumrah brings to the Indian attack.
However, Auqib Nabi does not need to be another Bumrah.
His job will be to continue doing what has made him successful in domestic cricket—bowling disciplined spells, creating pressure and taking wickets consistently.
The conditions in Sri Lanka will also test his adaptability, but this series gives him a golden opportunity to prove that his domestic success can translate to the international level.
All eyes will now be on the young pacer as he prepares to make the biggest step of his cricketing career.
