New Delhi, 3 August 2026: The 11-day Commonwealth Games 2026 held in Glasgow, Scotland, came to an end with a colourful and grand ceremony. The closing ceremony witnessed a historic moment when the responsibility of hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games was officially handed over to India. With this, the countdown for the centenary edition to be held in Ahmedabad has officially begun.
The hosting rights were handed over from Scotland to India in this grand ceremony held at the Hydro Arena in Glasgow. The Commonwealth Flag was handed over to India in the special presence of two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra and Indian Olympic Association President P.T. Usha. After accepting the flag, India presented a grand glimpse of “Ahmedabad 2030” to the world. Renowned singer Shankar Mahadevan and actress Manushi Chhillar presented a wonderful cultural performance based on the themes of “Vande Mataram” and “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”, leaving a captivating impression of Indian heritage.
The Games were a huge success for India on the international stage. Indian athletes performed brilliantly, winning a total of 39 medals (13 gold, 17 silver and 9 bronze) in various events including boxing, athletics, weightlifting and shooting, and secured the fourth position in the medal tally. During the closing ceremony, gold-winning boxer Jasmine Lamboria led the Indian team by carrying the Indian tricolour. Athletes from all 74 Commonwealth countries and territories took part in the parade.
Glasgow 2026 Organising Committee Chairman George Blake congratulated India, saying it was a matter of pride to see the transfer of responsibility between two great riverside cities. Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, officially declared the Games closed and invited all athletes to meet in Ahmedabad in four years. Now that the Commonwealth flag is in India’s hands, the world’s eyes are on Ahmedabad 2030, where the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games will be held. For India, this will not only be a hosting opportunity but also an important platform to showcase its identity and capabilities as a global sporting powerhouse.
