Extensive rains will occur throughout large areas of India for the coming week, as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts heavy to very heavy rains in some states due to the ongoing active monsoon regime. It should be noted that a new Western Disturbance may bring additional rainfall to northwest India starting from August 4, causing increased precipitation in the Himalayas and adjacent plains.

According to the IMD’s All India Weather Summary & Forecast Bulletin, extensive to fairly extensive rains are predicted to occur in many areas of northwest, central, eastern, northeastern and southern India up until August 8, including heavy rains in several states and isolated very heavy rains in certain regions.

The weather system responsible for the prevailing conditions is that of a low pressure system which continues to prevail over southwest Rajasthan. Accompanying this system are the cyclonic circulation up to 5.8 km above mean sea level, the monsoon trough over north India extending into Manipur, the off-shore trough from south Gujarat to north Kerala and a few upper air cyclonic circulations over Uttarakhand and northwest Bangladesh. Collectively, all these systems continue to support active monsoon conditions over the country.


Heavy rains forecast over several regionsFor August 3, heavy to very heavy rains at isolated places have been forecast by the IMD over Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim. Heavy rains are also expected over Assam & Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, Coastal Karnataka, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh, Jharkhand, Kerala & Mahe, Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Odisha, Punjab, South Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

During August 4, the areas in the northeast direction become more prominent with Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim receiving heavy to very heavy rainfall. Very heavy rainfall is also predicted in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Punjab, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and the western Himalayan zone.

Rainfall activities will persist throughout the week. During August 5, very heavy rainfall will take place in Assam & Meghalaya and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, whereas heavy rainfall is expected in Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Similarly, heavy rain will be forecasted in most of the aforementioned states during August 6, 7 and 8.

Flash flood risk in Himalayan statesA low flash flood risk outlook has been issued by the IMD for the next 24 hours for some watersheds in Jammu & Kashmir & Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. The agency informed that the saturated ground condition along with rainfall may cause surface runoff and flooding of low-lying areas in the concerned districts.

Public advisoryThe meteorological department has warned about heavy rainfall leading to localized flooding, water logging in urban areas, travel disruption, low visibility, landslide in vulnerable areas, and damage to kutcha roads and weak structures. It has asked the public to keep a check on the traffic conditions prior to going on a trip and also to avoid places where water logging occurs.
