Ayodhya, August 2: The second Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to probe the alleged theft of donations at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya is set to broaden its investigative scope. Sources indicate that the inquiry will encompass various operational aspects of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, with forensic experts playing a crucial role.

SIT's Approach and Plans

According to insiders, the SIT, led by Inspector General Kiran S., may request additional documents and re-evaluate evidence related to the alleged misuse of donations from devotees. The team is expected to arrive in Ayodhya shortly. Following directives from the Supreme Court, the SIT includes Deputy Inspector General Somen Verma and Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Grover from the Ayodhya region.

Involvement of Forensic Experts

The investigation will also involve a forensic auditor and another specialist. Reports suggest that the SIT will scrutinize the roles of trust officials based on statements recorded during the investigation and the evidence collected. Additionally, the team is re-examining the involvement of officials from the State Bank of India (SBI), outsourced staff, and others associated with donation collection and counting to determine if any of them played a part in the alleged crime.

Notices Issued for Inquiry

Sources reveal that the new SIT has issued notices to over 200 individuals for questioning. Former General Secretary of the Trust, Champat Rai, and Trustee Anil Mishra may also be called in for inquiries. The case was registered based on the preliminary report from the first SIT led by Lucknow's Divisional Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant.

Previous Arrests and Financial Irregularities

In connection with the alleged theft, police have arrested eight suspects and recorded statements from trust officials. There are claims that the investigation's scope has been expanded to include potential financial irregularities related to expenses during religious ceremonies and festivals at the temple. This information comes at a time when the Trust has intensified its oversight of donation management.

Trust's Measures for Transparency

Trust member Mahant Diner Das stated on Saturday that the investigation into alleged irregularities involving gold, silver, and other donations is nearing its final stages. He mentioned that since July 25, every step of the donation management process has been continuously monitored through video recording, and additional CCTV cameras along with an eight-member monitoring team have been deployed to enhance transparency. Das confirmed that worship and visitation at the temple continue as usual.
