Road Accident Insurance: Under the PM-RAHAT scheme, road accident victims receive cashless medical treatment. So far, 62% of the claims have been settled. Here is an update on the scheme's status and which states have benefited the most.
Road Accident Cashless Treatment: If a person is injured in a road accident and lacks immediate funds for treatment, the Central Government's PM-RAHAT scheme provides assistance. The scheme offers cashless medical treatment to road accident victims. However, even five months after the scheme's launch, not all claims have been settled. The government informed the Lok Sabha that claims worth approximately ₹10.1 crore have been paid out so far.
Only 62% of Claims Settled
Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari informed the Lok Sabha that under the PM-RAHAT scheme, out of 12,727 claims filed by hospitals up to July 28, 9,601 were approved; however, only 7,871 claims have been paid so far. This means that approximately 62% of the total claims have been settled. A significant portion of the approved claims under the PM-RAHAT scheme remains unpaid.
The PM-RAHAT scheme was launched to ensure timely medical treatment for road accident victims. The notification for the scheme was issued in May 2025, and it was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2026. Under this scheme, if an accident occurs on a national highway, the injured person receives free treatment up to a fixed limit at a listed hospital. The hospital claims the entire cost of treatment directly from the government, sparing the patient or their family from the need to arrange funds immediately.
States That Benefited the Most
The scheme has seen the highest utilization in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. In Gujarat, 4,308 claims were registered, of which 3,355 have been settled. Meanwhile, in Madhya Pradesh, 2,597 out of 3,850 claims were settled. A significant number of claims have also been registered in Assam, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh.
In several large states, the benefits of this scheme have reached very few people so far. Despite the high number of road accidents in Uttar Pradesh, only 344 claims were filed, and payments were made for just five of them. In Rajasthan, 144 claims were filed, yet not a single claim had been approved by July 28. Low utilization of the scheme has also been observed in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Delhi, and Punjab.
The government states that more hospitals located near national highways are being brought under the scheme to expand its reach. Additionally, states and Union Territories have been advised to take necessary measures to ensure that road accident victims receive emergency medical treatment without delay.
