This year, the month of Sawan began on July 30th. This month is considered the most sacred for Shiva worship. For this reason, many devotees embark on the Kanwar Yatra, where they bring water from the Ganges or another holy river in lakhs. This water is used to anoint the Shivalinga with water. According to religious experts, devotees must observe certain rules during the Kanwar Yatra, for only then will the journey be considered successful.
This year, the month of Sawan will run from July 30th to August 28th. During this period, many devotees observe fasts on Mondays, while others perform Rudrabhishek. Additionally, many also embark on the Kanwar Yatra. Now, the question arises: what rules should devotees follow during the Kanwar Yatra? Let’s explore 5 special rules for the Kanwar Yatra.
5 Rules of the Kanwar Yatra
1. Do Not Place the Kanwar on the Ground – During this journey, Kanwariyas should not place their Kanwar on the ground. According to religious belief, placing a Kanwar filled with water on the ground is considered inappropriate. If a devotee accidentally places the Kanwar on the ground, they should bring it back filled with water. It is believed that performing Jalabhishek with water from a Kanwar placed on the ground does not bring Lord Shiva’s blessings and the puja is considered incomplete.
2. Take Water from a Holy River – Kanwar pilgrims should ensure that they only take water from a flowing holy river. Water from a well or pond should not be used for the Kanwar.
3. Avoid Tamasic Food and Intoxicants – Devotees should avoid consuming Tamasic foods, such as garlic, onion, meat, and fish, during the Yatra. They should also completely abstain from alcohol, cigarettes, gutkha, and other intoxicants.
4. Avoid wearing leather items – Leather items should be avoided during the Kanwar Yatra. This means avoiding leather wallets, belts, and shoes.
5. Avoid wearing slippers – During this journey, devotees should not only wear clean clothes, but also, as per religious beliefs, travel barefoot whenever possible and avoid wearing slippers or shoes.
