Indus Water Treaty Suspension Report: The Indian government’s decision to suspend the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) following the killing of 26 innocent civilians in the Pahalgam attack by Pakistani terrorists last year has been described as strategic and logical. A report says international agreements cannot be ignored to serve the interests of one party.

According to a Media India Group report, the current Indus Water Treaty framework was built on unconditional trust, placing all responsibilities solely on India, without providing any benefits in return. Consequently, this system has proven to be a failure and needs to be changed.

Supporting terrorism undermined the spirit of the Indus Water Treaty: Report

The report stated that Pakistan has failed to demonstrate the necessary commitment to peaceful relations, constructive dialogue with India, and effective implementation of the treaty. Islamabad continues to engage in hostile rhetoric and diplomatic provocations, including threats of nuclear attack against India. Furthermore, it is undermining the spirit of the Indus Waters Treaty by supporting cross-border terrorism.

Pakistan is furious over the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty.

The report said that India remains firm on its stance on suspending the Indus Water Treaty. This agreement, signed in 1960, deals with the sharing of water from five Himalayan rivers in the Indus Basin. This has infuriated Pakistan. However, Pakistan must understand that it must treat India as a good neighbor, as India has treated it since Partition in 1947. Whether it’s nuclear threats or going to an international tribunal, it will achieve nothing.

Water and blood cannot flow together: Government of India

According to the report, India has consistently made it clear that it will continue to take firm action against cross-border terrorism. New Delhi has stated that meaningful dialogue with Pakistan is possible only if there is an environment free of terror and violence, and Pakistan ensures that its territory is not used for terrorism against India. The Indian government has stated its official position clearly: “Water and blood cannot flow together, nor can terror and trade coexist.”

Pakistan was embarrassed internationally.

The report stated that Pakistan waged four conventional wars against India, each time resulting in international embarrassment and diplomatic defeat. However, instead of introspection after defeat, Pakistan’s military-political establishment escalated hostility, choosing denial over accountability and ideological dogmatism over reform.

The report stated that, therefore, unless Pakistan undergoes a radical transformation of its national consciousness – until the military’s ideological monopoly is broken, democratic accountability is established, and Pakistan sees itself as a viable nation rather than a bastion against India – the hopes of a regular flow of Indus waters and normal cross-border trade will remain a distant dream. Without this transformation, any dialogue with Pakistan will remain fragile, unstable, and every initiative is doomed to failure.
