Amazon is set to launch a satellite-based direct-to-device (D2D) service soon. This service will be part of Amazon’s satellite internet project. Through this, users will get internet connectivity directly on their smartphones without any additional hardware.

Amazon is working on a new direct-to-device (D2D) satellite service as satellite-based connectivity becomes more widespread. This service will allow users to connect their smartphones directly to satellites in space and provide network access even in areas where there are no mobile towers.

The company aims to bring connectivity to areas where mobile network or internet access is still limited. Amazon’s move is seen as a major challenge to companies already operating in the satellite internet space.

Amazon’s D2D service

D2D, or Direct-to-Device, is a wireless connectivity system that connects a mobile phone directly to a satellite network. It does not require a mobile tower, fiber network, or additional hardware.

Mobile phones usually rely on nearby telecom towers to receive network signals. However, with D2D technology, the smartphone can receive signals directly from low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites. Low-earth orbit satellites orbit relatively low above the Earth’s surface. This allows for faster and more efficient data transmission.

Direct connection between smartphone and satellite

Amazon’s proposed D2D service will establish a direct connection between a smartphone and a satellite. When the user is in an area where mobile networks are not available, the phone will get connectivity via a satellite signal.

The main advantage of this technology is that users can maintain communication even in remote areas. Satellite connectivity can be helpful whether one is in a mountainous area, in the middle of the ocean, in a forest, or any other place where a regular network does not reach.

Competition with Starlink

Amazon’s D2D service is considered a major challenge for companies operating in the satellite internet sector. Elon Musk’s company Starlink is already working on satellite-based internet services and has also taken steps towards direct-to-device technology.

Starlink has partnered with mobile network companies to test a system that provides connectivity directly from satellites to smartphones. Amazon is also developing similar technology to strengthen its global presence.

Preparing to use Globalstar infrastructure

According to reports, Amazon is preparing to use the infrastructure of a satellite operator like Globalstar to advance its satellite connectivity project. Globalstar is a company that has been working in the satellite communications sector for a long time.

Amazon may try to strengthen its D2D service using Globalstar’s network and technical capabilities.

Amazon’s D2D service is likely to be most beneficial for those living in areas where traditional mobile networks are difficult to reach. The technology could be particularly useful in rural areas, mountainous areas, coastal areas, and disaster-stricken areas.

When normal communication systems fail during a natural disaster or emergency, satellite connectivity can play a key role in relief and rescue operations.

D2D service is different from satellite internet.

Although D2D technology is often associated with satellite internet, there is a big difference between the two. Satellite internet usually requires a special dish, antenna, or router. These are what receive the signal coming from the satellite.

In contrast, in D2D service, the mobile phone itself connects directly to the satellite, meaning users do not need to carry any additional equipment.
