People are going out after a collection to take their bins in and discover a new caddy for food waste. New food waste laws require weekly household collections across England, separate business food waste, and aim to reduce landfill use. These rules are part of the Government’s Simpler Recycling reforms.

However, bin collectors are warning people that they can’t just stick anything in the caddy – and that if the wrong items are in it, it will not be collected, Essex Live reports.

Advice on what to do suggests seven items that people may be confused about whether they are permitted to put them in but they are forbidden. The items are:

People are told to remove all plastic before disposal. “Incorrect items mean your bin won’t be emptied.”

The service said: “From tea bags to plate scrapings, to meat and fish bones, no matter how small, it can be recycled through the new food waste service.

“Just remove any packaging, and pop it into the caddy. We can also collect non-compostable items, such as bones and skin, or cooked and uncooked meats! For a list of some of the items that can go into the food waste caddies, see below.”

Explaining the change the government said: “Separating food waste helps reduce waste and benefits the environment through anaerobic digestion, producing energy and biofertiliser. If you don’t use the service, you’ll still have fortnightly general waste collections, but extra bags won’t be accepted.”
