“A red alert has been issued for Chhattisgarh due to the impact of a deep depression formed in the Bay of Bengal, which is likely to cause heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. According to the India Meteorological Department and the Meteorological Center, Raipur, this weather system is moving northwest, which will cause the monsoon to remain highly active in the state for the next four days.”

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning this morning to be extremely cautious for the next 24 to 48 hours by marking it as a ‘deep depression’. This alert has been activated mainly keeping in mind the most severe form of monsoon in most parts of the state today (July 27) and tomorrow (July 28). This has been done due to the transformation of the low pressure area formed over the North-West Bay of Bengal and adjoining North Odisha-West Bengal coast into a strong depression and the monsoon trough formed at sea level spreading to the North-West Bay of Bengal via Western Rajasthan, Orai, Sidhi, Ranchi.

Meteorologist BR Chindalore explained that a depression in the Bay of Bengal is continuously drawing moisture toward Chhattisgarh. This is leading to a substantial amount of water vapor reaching Chhattisgarh. Meanwhile, the monsoon trough and the shear zone in the upper air are rapidly forming clouds. This is why rainfall activity will remain intense for the next few days.

The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms in most parts of Bilaspur, Raipur, and Durg divisions. Strong winds with speeds of up to 30 to 40 km/h and lightning are likely in many parts of the state. Moderate to heavy rain will continue in districts like Balod Bazar, Dhamtari, Gariaband, Janjgir-Champa, Mahasamund, and Raigarh. In the past 24 hours, Basna in Mahasamund has recorded the highest rainfall of 15 cm.

According to the local forecast for the capital city of Raipur, the sky will be generally cloudy with the possibility of thunderstorms and showers. The city’s maximum temperature is expected to be around 29 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature around 25 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department has urged citizens to stay in safe places during the inclement weather.
