New Delhi: The long-drawn divorce case between Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and his wife Payal Abdullah has finally come to an end. The Supreme Court has issued a decree dissolving the marriage by mutual consent.  

The court said, “This is a welcome and good thing.”

Before a bench of Justices PS Narasimha and Alok Aradhe, both parties stated that there was no dispute left between them and they wished to separate of their own free will.  

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal appeared on behalf of Omar Abdullah during the hearing. He told the court that “both parties have accepted their respective independence. All disputes have been resolved. The honourable court can pass a decree of divorce.”  

The court considered this a positive step. The bench remarked, “This is a welcome development and a good thing.” Since all issues had been resolved amicably, the court settled the case on these terms.  

It was also clarified that all pending legal matters between the two, other than the divorce, would be withdrawn. Following this, the Supreme Court issued a final order dissolving the marriage.  

They had been living apart for years

Omar Abdullah and Payal Abdullah had been living separately for a long time. Their divorce case had been ongoing in court for several years. Now, after a mutual agreement, the matter has been resolved.  

According to legal experts, mutual consent divorce is the easiest process. When both spouses jointly state to the court that they no longer wish to live together and that there is no dispute between them, the court grants a decree.  

Discussion in political circles

This decision, concerning Omar Abdullah’s personal life while serving as Chief Minister, has been a topic of discussion in political circles. However, both parties have maintained a distance from the media, calling it a purely private matter.  

Kapil Sibal argued in court that both now want to live their lives independently. There is no bitterness of any kind and all outstanding issues have been resolved through mutual dialogue.  

The Supreme Court also resolved the matter promptly, without further delay. The court stated that since both parties are agreeable, there is no reason to interfere. With this decision, there is no legal relationship between Omar and Payal Abdullah. They will now begin their separate lives.
