New Delhi: This entire month is considered to have special religious significance in Hinduism. Fasting on the Mondays of Sawan, in particular, bestows special blessings from Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is believed that this fast, observed with devotion and proper rituals, paves the way for happiness, prosperity, and the fulfillment of desires. If you are observing the Sawan Monday fast for the first time, be sure to learn its rules and rituals.

Importance of Sawan Monday fast

The Sawan Monday fast is not just about abstaining from food, but also symbolizes purity of mind, speech, and action. Worshiping Lord Shiva, chanting mantras, and meditating on this day brings peace of mind and positive energy.

Important rules of Sawan Monday fast

Eating sattvic food is considered most important during the fast. Onions, garlic, and tamasic foods should be avoided on this day. Many families also avoid eggplant, yogurt, curry, and certain green vegetables during Sawan. However, this practice may vary depending on the region and family beliefs.

Fruits, milk, or roasted makhana can be eaten in the morning. Fasting meals made from sabudana khichdi, sama rice, or potatoes can be consumed in the afternoon. Coconut water, fruits, or dried fruits are considered appropriate in the evening. If you break your fast at night, first perform a puja and aarti of Lord Shiva. Afterward, break your fast with a light, sattvik meal.

Method of worship

On Sawan Monday, wake up early in the morning, take a bath, and wear clean clothes. Afterward, clean the place of worship and meditate on Lord Shiva. Offer water and Ganga water to the Shivalinga. Then, offer Bel leaves, Datura (a sacred thread), white flowers, ashes, and other worship materials.

Keep in mind that Tulsi leaves and Ketaki flowers are not offered to Lord Shiva. Chanting the Shiva Chalisa, Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, or “Om Namah Shivaya” after the puja is considered highly auspicious.

Pay special attention to these things

During the Sawan Monday fast, one should refrain from anger, lying, swearing, and insulting others. Try to spend the day meditating on Lord Shiva, singing hymns, and chanting mantras. A fast observed with true devotion and a pure heart pleases Lord Shiva, and devotees’ wishes are believed to be fulfilled.
