Mumbai. The prevalence of diabetes is increasing in Mumbai. Even children are now being affected by type 1 diabetes. Approximately 19,000 new cases are being diagnosed each year. More than 1,300 children with type 1 diabetes are being treated at Mumbai’s Wadia Hospital.
In Mumbai, a new patient is being diagnosed approximately every five days. Experts say that with timely identification, regular insulin use, and constant monitoring, children can live normal and healthy lives. More than 1,200 children undergo regular follow-ups in the hospital’s pediatric endocrinology department. A special diabetes clinic is held every week, where specialist doctors, diabetes educators, nurses, dietitians, and psychologists provide children and their families with treatment, nutrition, psychological support, and essential information about the disease.
According to Dr. Sudha Rao, the hospital’s medical director and pediatric endocrinologist, type 1 diabetes is not caused by a poor diet or lifestyle, but rather by an autoimmune disease. In this condition, the body destroys insulin-producing cells, requiring lifelong insulin treatment. Treatment for a child costs between 70,000 and 90,000 rupees annually, or even more. Financial constraints force many families to forgo treatment.
