There’s something special about wearing shiny new dark jeans, but after a couple of washes, their color begins to fade . Even the most expensive denim can look old and dull if not properly cared for. If you’re worried about the fading color of your favorite black or dark blue jeans, you needn’t worry anymore. By adopting a few simple and effective home remedies, you can keep your jeans looking fresh for years.

1. Magic vinegar and salt solution

Whenever you buy new dark jeans, be sure to try this trick before washing them for the first time. Mix half a cup of white vinegar and two teaspoons of common salt in a bucket of cold water. Soak the jeans in this solution for about 30 to 45 minutes. This salt and vinegar mixture locks the color into the fabric fibers, preventing it from fading even after repeated washings.

2. Always wash inside out.
The most basic rule for washing jeans is to always turn them inside out when washing and drying. This prevents the detergent and water from directly affecting the outer color of the jeans and reduces friction between the fabrics.

3. Use only cold water.
Hot or lukewarm water loosens the fibers and causes the color to bleed faster. Therefore, always wash dark denim in cold water.

4. Choose liquid and mild detergents.
Powder detergents often don’t dissolve completely and can stick to the jeans’ fabric, damaging its color. Use a liquid detergent specifically formulated for dark clothing. Be sure to avoid detergents containing bleach or harsh chemicals altogether.

5. Rely on hand washing over washing machines. Vigorous
spinning in a machine can cause dark fabrics to lose color faster. If possible, wash dark jeans gently. If you must machine wash them, choose the “gentle” or “delicate” mode.

6. Sun protection is essential.
Never dry jeans in the harsh sun after washing. The sun’s harmful UV rays can quickly fade dark colors. Always dry jeans inside out in a shady or well-ventilated area.
