Chelsea are reportedly monitoring a possible move for Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall after Manchester United failed to make progress on a deal.

Hall has impressed during his spell at Newcastle, and it is understandable that bigger clubs are now showing interest in signing him this summer.

With leading names such as Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon both leaving St James’ Park, and Eddie Howe also stepping down from his role as manager today, Hall could become another player heading towards the exit.

According to Simon Phillips, Hall is a ‘dream target’ for Chelsea, with the Blues interested in bringing back their former academy player.

The 21-year-old spent time in Chelsea’s academy from 2012 to 2022, but made only 12 appearances for the club’s first team.

Hall then joined Newcastle United in an initial loan move in 2023/24, with the transfer later made permanent.

Now, though, Hall’s future appears uncertain as both Manchester United and Chelsea show interest in the England left-back.

Phillips says United have been keen on Hall, but the lack of movement could open the door for Chelsea to re-enter the race.

Phillips wrote: “Hall is largely expected to be departing Newcastle United this summer, with Manchester United the main linked side. But nothing has moved there yet, and Chelsea are hovering…

“I don’t have much in the way of significant news to report on this one yet, but the fact Hall continues to come up in conversations at the club, and my own conversations with my top source, makes it an intriguing situation still.

“Our top source believes that even though Hall left Chelsea on fairly bad terms, there is a chance it can be repaired and the player can be convinced to come back, with the help of Xabi Alonso and the fact they will offer him a key starting role in the squad under him.”

Hall could be an ideal option for Chelsea at the moment following Marc Cucurella’s departure from the left-back position, although it is also easy to understand why Manchester United may view him as an upgrade on the injury-prone Luke Shaw.

Newcastle will no doubt want to avoid further sales, but the situation is increasingly beginning to look like a crisis, with so many important figures leaving in a short period.
