West Indies captain Roston Chase paid tribute to the late Garfield Sobers as he and his teammates registered a famous 90-run win against Pakistan in the first Test.

Garfield Sobers, a legendary all-rounder, passed away on July 17. The West Indies batting and bowling legend played 93 Test matches for his country between 1954 and 1974, scoring 8032 runs at an average of 57.78 with 26 centuries and taking 235 wickets.

Speaking in a video posted by Cricket West Indies, Chase said Sobers is an inspiration to all and that he hoped they made him proud.

“On behalf of the West Indies senior men's cricket team, I would like to dedicate this victory to the great Garfield Sobers. He is a legend and a hero of all of us in this room. He has done it all on the cricket field, and he is so revered and iconic that he would have been 90 today, and we won by 90 runs, so it was bound to happen for him,” Roston Chase said.

“We talked about it in the room before that we wanted to make something special for him in his grave, and I hope he is with us right now. So, Sir Garfield Sobers, I would like to say thanks for everything you did for West Indies cricket. And we made you proud, so I hope you are happy, and may you rest in peace,” he added.

West Indies drew first blood in the two-Test series after Pakistan were bowled out for 120 inside 46 overs in reply to their 211. Seales claimed five wickets as the hosts registered a 90-run win in the first Test to take a 1-0 series lead.

Azam had fought valiantly with a gritty half-century before being run out, but Pakistan were left with no reply as fast bowler Jayden Seales claimed five wickets. Captain Shan Masood played on with a broken fingertip but had little support as Pakistan suffered their eighth consecutive away Test defeat.

The two teams will lock horns again in the second and final Test in Port of Spain, starting on Tuesday, in what promises to be an exciting series finale. West Indies will look to avenge their 2015 defeat at the hands of Pakistan in their last meeting.
