Manchester City have left James Trafford out of their squad for the club’s Asia tour as his move to Leeds United moves a step closer.
According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds are putting together a club-record deal worth £40 million plus add-ons for the 23-year-old. That fee would go beyond the £35.5 million the club paid for Georginio Rutter in January 2023.
Personal terms are not expected to pose any problem, and the expectation is that he will become a Leeds player this summer.
City are due to play pre-season matches in Hong Kong and Seoul over the coming week. New head coach Enzo Maresca has picked four goalkeepers for the trip: first-choice Gianluigi Donnarumma, Marcus Bettinelli, and academy duo Max Chabot and Jack Wint. Trafford is one of a small group of players still on a compulsory three-week break after the World Cup, having been part of England’s squad.
He is set to get regular first-team opportunities at Leeds, who currently have only Lucas Perri and Alex Cairns in their goalkeeping group. Karl Darlow and Illan Meslier allowed their Elland Road contracts to expire before joining Manchester United and Arsenal respectively this summer. Trafford is reportedly keen on a move to Daniel Farke’s side, and he is said to have ambitions of replacing Jordan Pickford as England’s No.1, though he first needs to be playing regularly at club level.
