LPG Rates Today (July 30): There has been no change in LPG cylinder prices across the country today. The price of domestic LPG cylinders was last raised by ₹29 on June 7; since then, rates have remained unchanged.

LPG Rates Today (July 30): Concerns regarding LPG prices persist in the country, even though rates have remained stable for over a month. Due to the deteriorating situation in West Asia—stemming from ongoing tensions between the US and Iran—there has been a significant drop in the number of ships passing through the crucial Strait of Hormuz shipping route in recent days.

In light of this, and to reduce dependence on the Middle East while avoiding supply disruptions, India plans to source one-fourth of its total Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) imports from the US by 2027. This move is also expected to advance discussions regarding a trade deal with the US.

Reducing dependence on Gulf nations

Earlier this year, the country experienced a severe LPG shortage due to the conflict between Iran and the US and the resulting blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Consequently, India has decided to diversify its LPG sourcing.

India is the world's third-largest oil importer and consumer. In 2025, India sourced approximately 90% of its 21.85 million metric tonnes of LPG imports from the Middle East. According to government data, imports accounted for about 66% of the country's total LPG consumption.

Indian Oil bets on VLGCs

Meanwhile, reports indicate that India's largest refining company, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), plans to acquire a 50% stake in Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs). The company is preparing to increase its imports of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) from the United States. IOC will be the first Indian refining company to own Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs). This means that instead of relying on chartered LPG and crude tankers to source the gas, the company will import large quantities of cooking gas directly from the US using its own massive vessels.
