In a remarkable display of athletic prowess, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya praised India's exceptional one-two finish in the men's T47 100m event during the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow. He extended his congratulations to gold medalist Dilip Mahadu Gavit and silver medalist Mohammed Basil Morssinganakth for their outstanding performances.
Following the race, Mandaviya shared his excitement on social media, stating, "A historic double podium for Bharat! Heartiest congratulations to Dilip Mahadu Gavit for winning Gold with a Games Record (10.71s) and Mohammed Basil for clinching Silver (10.83s) in the Men’s Para 100m T47. Dilip's achievement as the first Indian male para-athlete to secure a CWG Athletics Gold makes this victory even more significant. Well done, Champions!"
On Day 7 of the Games, Gavit set a new Commonwealth Games record by finishing the race in 10.71 seconds, while Basil followed closely behind, securing silver with a time of 10.83 seconds. England's Kevin Santos earned the bronze medal with a time of 10.85 seconds, marking a memorable podium sweep for India in this para-athletics sprint event.
Gavit showcased an impressive sprint in the final 30 meters, pulling ahead of his competitors, while Basil skillfully maintained his position against Santos to ensure India took the top two spots.
Gavit's gold medal was India's sole gold of the day and the third overall in the Games. Basil's silver added to the tally after long jumper Murali Sreeshankar also won silver earlier in the men's long jump with a best jump of 8.09 meters.
With Gavit's gold, Basil's silver, and Sreeshankar's silver, India amassed three medals on Day 7, bringing the country's total medal count to 15, which includes three golds, nine silvers, and three bronzes.
The current medalists for India include Mirabai Chanu (gold, weightlifting), Sharmila Dhankar (gold, women's shot put F57), Dilip Mahadu Gavit (gold, men's T47 100m), Mohammed Basil Morssinganakth (silver, men's T47 100m), Murali Sreeshankar (silver, men's long jump), and several others across various events.
