Florida seems to have caught yet another super speeder in a C8-generation Chevrolet Corvette. This time, deputies say the mid-engine sports car was recorded at a staggering 130 miles per hour in a posted 45-mph zone. As per the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, the driver was arrested at the spot and taken to the St. Johns County Jail.

If you are ever pulled over and the first words from a deputy are, “What the hell are we doing?”, there is a strong chance your day is not going to end well. That is exactly how the traffic stop started for the driver of this black Corvette, as bodycam footage released by the sheriff’s office shows the deputy’s blunt reaction when he walks up to the driver’s window.

Modern Corvettes are hugely capable machines; even the latest version of the C8-generation base model, the 2027 Corvette Stingray, can reach 200 miles per hour. But public roads are not the right place to responsibly explore those kinds of speeds, because it is easy to underestimate how fast events unfold at such pace. A vehicle running at 130 mph covers roughly 190 feet every second, leaving almost no time for the driver, or anyone else on the road, to respond to an unexpected obstacle.

That warning applies even more in a municipality that has toughened penalties for extreme speeding. The Sunshine State’s Dangerous Excessive Speeding Law, sometimes called the “Super Speeder” law, makes it a criminal offence to go 50 mph or more over the posted limit, or to drive at more than 100 mph in a way that endangers people or property — and police say this Corvette driver did both. A first conviction can bring penalties of up to 30 days in jail, a $500 fine, or both.
