Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt is one of those actors who is not only known for his acting but also more discussed and known for its personal life and controversies.

Dutt’s journey has been filled with unforgettable highs and painful lows. As he turns 67 today, July 29, 2026, his life has been full of ups and downs, ranging from deeply personal struggles to delivering some of the most iconic silver screen performances.

Sanjay Dutt Early Life

Dutt was born on July 29, 1959, to legendary actors late Sunil Dutt and Nargis Dutt, who are still one of the most respected names in the Indian film industry. Dutt made his on-screen debut in the film Rocky in 1981, but just before Rocky was about to hit theatres, his mother, Nargis, passed away after fighting pancreatic cancer.

After the death of his mother, he slipped into severe drug addiction. What started as a difficult phase soon became a life-threatening battle that affected both his health and career, after which his father, Sunil Dutt, sent him to a rehabilitation center in Jackson, Mississippi.

After months of treatment, Sanjay made a powerful comeback with cult films like Naam and Sadak, which proved that he had successfully rebuilt his life and career after overcoming addiction.

In 1993, Sanjay Dutt’s life turned 360 degrees when he was arrested under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) and the Arms Act. Authorities recovered an illegal AK-56 rifle and hand grenades from him that were part of a weapons consignment linked to the 1993 Bombay blasts.

Dutt told the authorities that he had obtained the weapon only to protect his family during the communal riots in Mumbai.

Later, the court cleared the charges regarding terrorism, but he was convicted under the Arms Act for illegal possession of weapons. The case continued for more than two decades, which led him to jail several times. In February 2016, Sanjay Dutt completed his sentence and walked out of jail and started a new life.

After fighting a legal battle for years, Sanjay delivered some of the most iconic films of Bollywood, which include Munna Bhai MBBS, Lage Raho Munna Bhai as a lead, and as a supporting character in KGF: Chapter 2, Jawan, and the Dhurandhar franchise.
