India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav clinched the silver medal in the women’s 53kg weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games 2026, producing a record-breaking performance to continue the country’s impressive run in Glasgow on Monday.

The Indian enjoyed a flawless outing in the snatch, successfully clearing 82kg, 85kg and 88kg in her three attempts to finish second after the opening discipline. Nigeria’s Onome Omolola Didih led the standings with 93kg, while Canada’s Rebeka Groulx was third with 83kg.

Gyaneshwari carried that momentum into the clean and jerk, opening with a comfortable 103kg lift before improving to 107kg in her second attempt.

With the silver medal on the line, the Indian delivered when it mattered most, successfully lifting 111kg in her final attempt. The effort not only secured her a place on the podium but also established a new personal best, a new Indian national record in the clean and jerk (111kg), and a new national record total of 199kg (88kg + 111kg).

Nigeria’s Onome Omolola Didih went on to claim the gold medal, while Rebeka Groulx of Canada settled for bronze.

Gyaneshwari’s silver extended India’s rich vein of form in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games 2026.

Yesterday, Mirabai Chanu scripted history by winning her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal, while Rishikanta Singh and Raja Muthupandi bagged silver medals in the men’s 60kg and 65kg categories, respectively.

The medal also took India’s tally to five medals in Glasgow, one gold, three silver and one bronze.
