Cristiano Ronaldo's position in Portugal's starting lineup may no longer be assured following the appointment of Jorge Jesus as national team head coach, according to former Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira.

Portugal's 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign ended in the Round of 16 with a 1-0 defeat to eventual champions Spain. Despite the disappointment, Ronaldo added another landmark to his career by becoming the first player to appear in six FIFA World Cups and finished the tournament with three goals.

Vieira believes Jesus is well equipped to manage Ronaldo's role as Portugal enters a new phase. Having worked closely with the coach during his time at Benfica, Vieira said Jesus has the experience and relationship with Ronaldo needed to handle the situation.

“I think he knows how to manage that situation, and will know how to manage it,” Vieira said. “He has a great relationship with Ronaldo, for sure.

“And Ronaldo also knows that the end is already being looked at. He will have to decide and, sometimes, maybe he will play; other times he will not play.”

While speculation has surrounded potential changes within the national team, Jesus has indicated that he does not intend to overhaul the squad immediately. The Portuguese coach stressed that continuity will be important as he begins his four-year tenure.

“People might think that the new manager is going to come in and change a lot of players,” Jesus said. “That won’t happen. I’m not stupid. On top of that, I don’t have enough time to bring in several players who weren’t called up this time.”

His comments suggest Ronaldo could continue to play a significant role for Portugal, although his involvement may vary as the team gradually plans for the future beyond its record goalscorer.

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s most prolific player, with 146 goals in 233 international appearances. His achievements include helping the country win the UEFA European Championship in 2016 and the UEFA Nations League in 2019.

Vieira also expressed confidence in Jesus' appointment, describing him as an experienced and highly professional coach capable of leading Portugal into its next chapter.

“I know him profoundly well. He is a super professional,” Vieira said.

“I’m not the only one saying it. The players who worked with him say the same thing. I think it’s the right choice. Having a Portuguese coach again is very important.”

As Portugal prepares for the next stage of its international journey, the challenge for Jesus will be balancing the continued influence of Ronaldo with the development of the team's future generation.
