Glasgow: India’s Mirabai Chanu Saikhom won a third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in the women’s 48kg event on Sunday, finishing with a total lift of 190kg.

This was India’s first gold medal in the tournament.

The lifter from Manipur recovered brilliantly after missing her opening attempts in both the snatch and the clean and jerk. She responded by lifting 85kg in the snatch to set a new Commonwealth record, before clearing 105kg in the clean and jerk to establish a new Commonwealth Games record in the discipline.

Her combined 190kg total also set a new Commonwealth Games total record, comfortably ahead of Nigeria’s Ruth Asuquo Nyong (168kg), who claimed silver, and Malaysia’s Irene Jane Henry (167kg), who took bronze, as reported by India Today.

It wasn’t just another gold medal for Mirabai Chanu — it was a night of record-breaking dominance. The Indian weightlifting star walked away with four records in the women’s 48kg event.

She first set a new Commonwealth Games snatch record with 82kg before raising the bar to 85kg, which established a new Commonwealth snatch record. In the clean and jerk, Mirabai’s successful 105kg lift created a new Commonwealth Games record, and her combined 190kg total also became a new Commonwealth Games total record.
