Social Media: Social media usage has surged across the country. Everyone, from children to the elderly, now spends hours active on these platforms. In light of this, many countries are moving to ban social media for young children. Following this trend, the Vietnamese government is also set to implement restrictions on social media use for children under 16.

New rules introduced

According to media reports, the Vietnamese government intends to stop children under 16 from posting content or reacting to posts on social media. Under the proposed regulations, social media accounts for children under 16 can only be created with the knowledge of their parents or legal guardians. Parents will also be responsible for monitoring these accounts, specifically tracking the type of content the child views and the amount of time spent on the platform.

Focus on child safety.

Phan Tam, a minister in the Vietnamese government, clarified that the government's goal is not to completely cut children off from social media. Instead, the aim is to ensure that when children use these platforms, they encounter a safe, age-appropriate digital environment that protects them from online threats.

Responsibility for social media companies

New regulations have also been introduced for social media companies. Companies will be required to use new technologies for age verification to accurately determine a child's age. Additionally, they must ensure that the content displayed to young children is age-appropriate.

Crackdown on online gaming

The measures are not limited to social media; the government is also preparing to take strict action regarding online games. Reports indicate that gaming companies will be required to verify the ages of their players. Gaming accounts for children under the age of 16 will be registered with parental knowledge. Additionally, a proposal has been made to limit the daily gaming time to a maximum of 60 minutes for children under 16 playing games from the same company.
