The silver jewellery, cutlery, and heirloom pieces lose their shine over time because of tarnish, a natural reaction between silver and sulphur compounds in the air. Commercial polishes exist, but many people prefer gentler alternatives using ordinary household materials instead. Mild soap and water for everyday grime

Not every piece needs deep polishing. For routine upkeep, washing with warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap is usually enough to remove fingerprints, dust, and surface oils. Use a soft sponge rather than anything abrasive, rinse thoroughly, and dry the item immediately with a soft cloth; leftover moisture sitting in grooves or hollow sections is one of the more common causes of avoidable damage. Regular gentle washing like this slows tarnish build-up on its own, cutting down how often more intensive polishing is needed later.

The aluminium foil bath — One correction worth knowing

The foil method genuinely works, but one detail gets repeated incorrectly almost everywhere online. Line a container with aluminium foil, add hot water, and dissolve washing soda into it, not baking soda, which is a different compound and not the one actually tested for this reaction. Place the silver in contact with the foil, and the reaction draws the tarnish off the silver and onto the foil instead. Remove after a few minutes, rinse well, and dry completely. The finish will look slightly dull afterward and usually needs a light buff.

A homemade chalk paste for deeper tarnish

For tarnish that a simple wash won't shift, one homemade paste outperforms most kitchen substitutes. Mix precipitated calcium carbonate, sold as precipitated chalk , with a small amount of water until it forms a smooth, thick paste. Apply with a soft cloth, rubbing gently in straight lines rather than circles, then rinse and dry thoroughly. Regular chalk or whiting shouldn't be used as a substitute here, since their coarser particles scratch the surface noticeably more than the fine, purified version does.

Handle it right while cleaning

How silver is handled matters almost as much as what it's cleaned with. Bare hands leave marks, since natural oils and salts on skin transfer onto the surface, cotton gloves are the better choice, and rubber or latex should be avoided entirely, since the sulfur in them speeds up tarnishing wherever they touch. Keep any wooden, bone, or ivory handles away from water during cleaning, and avoid soaking pieces with hollow sections or glued components, since trapped moisture is difficult to dry out completely afterward.

Proper storage prevents most of the problem

Keeping silver clean isn't only about polishing; storage plays an equally large role in how quickly tarnish returns. Store pieces in a cool, dry place, sealed in polyethylene bags with acid-free tissue paper where possible. A small sachet of silica gel and activated charcoal helps control humidity and absorb the sulphur compounds that cause tarnishing in the first place.
