1. Set the Privacy of Message Requests

Instagram lets you decide who can send you messages.

How to do:

Open the Instagram app.
Go to your Profile.
Tap the three-line (☰) menu at the top.
Open Settings and Privacy.
Go to Messages and Story Replies.
Here, select Don't Receive Requests from Unknown People.

This will prevent messages from strangers from coming directly to your inbox.

2. Block Spam Accounts

If an account is repeatedly sending spam, block it immediately.

How to block:

Open the person's profile.
Tap the three dots (⋮).
Select Block.

After this, that account will not be able to message or follow you.

3. Report Spam Messages

Instagram takes action against spam and fake accounts.

How to report:

Open the chat.
Press and hold the message.

6. Don't share your personal information

Never share this information in an Instagram chat:

OTP
Bank details
ATM or Debit Card number
Password
Aadhaar or PAN details

No trustworthy company or Instagram asks you for such information in chat.

7. Avoid Fake Followers and Bots

If an account:

Keeps very few posts,
uses strange usernames,
sends the same message to everyone,

It's likely a bot or fake account. Ignore, report, and block such accounts.

8. Use the Restrict Feature

If you don't want to block someone completely, use the Restrict feature.

From this:

Their messages will go to Requests.
They won't know you've read their message.
Your activity will also appear limited.
