Manchester City midfielder Rodri has arrived at a personal agreement with Real Madrid.
Even so, City and Madrid are still to settle on a transfer fee before the move can be completed.
Madrid have made Rodri a top priority as they keep working to strengthen their squad and avoid a third straight season without a trophy.
City are still keen to hold on to the experienced midfielder, whose current contract runs until next summer.
Rodri has been a key figure for Man City ever since he joined from Atletico Madrid.
However, after recovering from the knee injury he sustained in 2024, he has found it difficult to get back to his top level for City.
He recently played a big part in helping Spain win the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Rodri was also named the Player of the Tournament.
The 30-year-old would help Madrid control matches more efficiently with his calmness on the ball, smart positioning and ability to break up opposition attacks.
Rodri’s excellent passing range would also allow Madrid to build attacks more effectively from deep.
His existing understanding with Bernardo Silva, developed during their successful time together at City, would further improve Los Blancos’ midfield.
Rodri is a clear upgrade on Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga, who have struggled for consistency since coming to Madrid.
The Spaniard’s arrival could push Camavinga and Tchouameni towards leaving Madrid in search of more playing time.
If Rodri does complete a move to Los Blancos, he is likely to miss the start of the season as he prepares to undergo surgery to treat a back injury.
