A few days ago, Inter Miami returned to MLS action against the Chicago Fire. Before this match, we reported that Lionel Messi would not be available for the contest.
Even with that, the game carried another major storyline in the legendary clash between two of the finest number 9s of the 20th century. Yes, it was Luis Suarez versus Robert Lewandowski.
However, the duel was claimed by the Pistolero, as Inter Miami ended up with a favourable 3-2 scoreline. While the Herons secured three points, Luis Suarez finished the match with a fresh milestone, taking his great record even higher.
That is correct. Luis Suárez was named the Player of the Match against the Chicago Fire. For those who did not watch the game, the Uruguayan striker scored two goals to put the Herons in front on the scoreboard.
Even though his goals were not enough to win the match (young Plambeck scored the final goal), the Pistolero’s display helped him achieve a milestone that leaves him just behind Lionel Messi.
By winning this award, Suárez has claimed the MLS Player of the Matchday presented for the fourth time, and it is his first such honour since Matchday 29 of the 2024 season.
His milestone came when he moved past Leonardo Campana (3) for the second-most Player of the Matchday honours in club history, with only Lionel Messi (14) ahead of him.
This shows that, even if Suarez does not appear to be at his very best, he is still a reliable weapon when the match is level.
At this stage of his career, the former FC Barcelona player has once again shown that he must be in the starting XI, and when Lionel Messi is absent, he can be the leading attacking force.
Once again, Luis Suarez proved several doubters wrong, and Inter Miami collected three vital points to stay high in the Eastern Conference table.
