Maharashtra Monsoon : Monsoon has been extremely active in Maharashtra for the past few days and rains have taken the form of heavy rains in many districts of the state. According to the warning issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the low pressure area formed in the Arabian Sea has increased the rainfall over the coastal areas of West Maharashtra and North Maharashtra. Due to continuous rains in major cities like Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Pune and Nashik, many low-lying areas have accumulated water and this has had a major impact on the traffic system.
Flooding of rivers and discharge from Gangapur Dam
The situation has become very critical in Nashik district of North Maharashtra. Godavari river has experienced its worst flood of the season due to heavy rains in Trimbakeshwar area including Nashik city. Due to the rapid increase in water inflow in Gangapur dam area, the administration has started releasing water from the dam. As a result, small temples in Ramkund area and the idol of the famous ‘Dutondya Maruti’ have gone under water. Status of Bombay and Coastal Districts
Mumbai and its suburbs have been witnessing cloudy weather and heavy rain since Thursday morning. Some places in Palghar and Thane districts have recorded record breaking rainfall in 24 hours. Due to this heavy rain, a flood-like situation has arisen in Jawhar and Wada talukas of Palghar and many villages have lost connectivity. Among the seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai, the ‘Modak Sagar’ lake has overflowed, and the total water storage in all the lakes has now crossed 70 percent, which has eased the water worries of Mumbaikars to a large extent. Meteorological department warning and appeal to citizens
The Meteorological Department has issued a very important warning for Palghar and Thane districts for the next 24 hours. Also, tourists and citizens have been urged not to travel to the ghat area in view of the possibility of heavy rain at the top of the ghat of Pune. Keeping in view the rising water level of the rivers and the risk of landslides, the local administration has issued instructions to the riverside citizens and residents of the low-lying areas to be alert.
