Colorful start to Commonwealth Games; A winning start for India in lawn balls

The Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland kicked off in a grand manner with a colorful ceremony. About 3 thousand athletes from 74 countries and regions took part in the traditional Parade of Nations. The Indian contingent was led by Olympic silver medalist and 2-time Commonwealth champion Mirabai Chanu as the flag bearer. While Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist boxer Lovelyna Borgohen became India’s first official ceremonial baton bearer. Glasgow 2026 is the first such version, with separate roles of Flag Bearer and Batter Bearer.

Scottish culture seen in the opening ceremony

The opening ceremony was entirely dedicated to the culture and music of Scotland. Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Katie Tunstall and popular singer Tom Walker gave stellar performances. In addition, a number of Scottish acts entertained the crowd, including Nina Nesbitt, Callum Beattie, Nathan Evans, St PHNX and electro-Celtic duo Waltos.

India opened the account of victory in lawn balls

It was a great first day for India on the field. In the Women’s Pairs Lawn Bowls, Rupa Rani Tirki and Pinky opened India’s account by defeating Malta in a tiebreak in a thrilling encounter. The Indian pair won the first set 7-1, but Malta took the second set 4-3 to take the match to a tiebreak. At crucial moments, Indian players showed patience and took the win in their name.

– India’s biggest achievement on the first day was seen in men’s singles lawn bowls. 43-year-old Putul Sonowal caused a major upset by defeating Canada’s reigning champion, 3-time Commonwealth medalist and World Bowls Hall of Fame member Ryan Bester in a tiebreak. Asian champion Sonowal is currently ranked 21st in the world rankings and is among India’s medal hopes.
