Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday visited several flood-hit areas of Golaghat district to take stock of the damage and review the ongoing rescue and relief operations. CMO gave this information. He also visited several relief camps in the district, interacted with the flood affected people taking shelter there and reviewed the relief and rehabilitation measures being taken.

Visited relief camps

The Chief Minister visited the relief camp set up at Bhaskar Senior Basic School, Kamarbandha, where 178 flood affected people are currently taking shelter. He interacted with the people living there to understand their problems, daily needs and challenges faced by them. After the visit, the Chief Minister said that the district administration and concerned departments have been directed to ensure that all the essential needs of the affected people are met on priority basis. According to the CMO, 25,791 people have been affected in Golaghat district by the recent floods.

The Chief Minister later visited the relief camp set up at Numaligarh Higher Secondary School, where 182 flood-affected people, including a large number of children, have taken shelter. He spent some time with the children and inquired about their well-being.

Will get support from central government

Speaking to the media after visiting the camps, the Chief Minister said the recent floods have caused widespread hardship, damaging agricultural fields and affecting livestock, while a large number of families have been affected. He said the government is making every possible effort to provide adequate assistance to all affected.

Sarma further informed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the current flood situation in Assam by speaking to him on telephone today. He said Union Home Minister Amit Shah has informed him that an inter-ministerial central team will soon visit Assam to comprehensively assess the damage caused by the floods and examine the assistance required from the central government for relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction, the CMO informed.

CM Sarma said, "The flood situation in Assam is quite serious. So far 40 people have died, but as per our assessment, 70 to 80 people are still missing. My guess is that the number of casualties will increase further. This entire situation arose due to cloud burst in Nagaland. Flood waters came and badly affected four of our districts... Union Home Minister Amit Shah also just called me and told that today or tomorrow there will be a flood in Assam. An inter-ministerial team will be sent. I believe that together, both the governments will be able to stand with the people in this hour of grief." Many districts of Assam including Jorhat and Sivasagar have been affected by floods. (ANI)
