Singer-composer Jazim Sharma , known for songs such as Yaadon Ki Gullak, Grey Waala Shade and Chonch Ladhiyaan, says his grounding in Hindustani classical music has shaped both his voice and musical identity. "I started learning Hindustani classical music at the age of five. The first time I heard Ustad Ghulam Ali Khan Sahab, his voice touched my soul. My fascination with the harmonium and ghazals naturally drew me to the genre. Classical music is the foundation of every singer—it teaches discipline, technique and gives you the confidence to perform," he says.

Jazim credits his late guru, Shri Vijay Sachdeva, for shaping not just his music but also his values. Recalling an early performance, he says, "When experienced tabla players offered to accompany my guru, he refused and said, 'Aaj ye bajayega.' He chose encouragement over convenience. That moment taught me to respect talent, emotions and trust, and to always support fellow musicians."

Addressing the perception that ghazals cater to a niche audience, Jazim says the genre remains timeless. "I don't want to change the soul of the ghazal. My effort is to present it in a contemporary soundscape so younger listeners can connect with it while its essence remains intact." The singer says Ustad Ghulam Ali has had the biggest influence on his musical journey. "He was the reason I fell in love with ghazals. His emotional depth, improvisations and command over rhythm continue to inspire me."

While deeply rooted in tradition, Jazim enjoys experimenting with music. "I draw inspiration from the great masters, but I never want to imitate them. I want my music to reflect my own personality while respecting the traditions they have given us."

Looking ahead, he hopes to be recognised beyond his singing. "My goal is for people to know me not only as a ghazal singer but also as a composer and music director who respects tradition while exploring new musical possibilities. There is a lot of experimentation coming in my future work, and I'm excited to share it with everyone."
