28 year old Jhandu Kumar, resident of Nalanda district of Bihar, became a victim of polio in his childhood. After this he faced a lot of financial crisis in his life. To support the family, he did things like selling vegetables and driving e-rickshaws. After all these struggles, he worked hard in para-powerlifting and now he has been selected in the Indian team for Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026.
The Commonwealth Games 2026 are going to be held in Glasgow city of Scotland from 23 July to 2 August. In these games, about three thousand players from 74 countries around the world will participate in 10 different sports. In this big game, Jhandu Kumar is also playing for the country in Para-Powerlifting from India.
Childhood and the shadow of polio
Jhandu Kumar was born in an ordinary family in Harnaut, Nalanda district of Bihar. He contracted polio when he was four to five years old. Due to this disease, his legs stopped working, after which he had to take the help of crutches to walk.
Due to poverty, Jhandu Kumar had to struggle a lot to support his family. Due to poor financial condition at home, he started selling vegetables in the market. After this, his work was completely stopped during the Corona epidemic. When the work stopped, he borrowed money from friends and bought an e-rickshaw, but later due to financial constraints, he had to sell that e-rickshaw also.

Before joining para-powerlifting, he also participated in sports like shot put, javelin throw and discus throw. After this he focused his entire attention on para-powerlifting and progressed in this sport. During this time he got correct guidance from Rajendra Singh Rahelu. He had created a national record by lifting 206 kg in the 72 kg weight category in the 2025 Khelo India Para Games. Earlier, he had lifted 205 kg weight in the Para National Championship of Noida.
Apart from this, he won bronze medals in the 2025 World Cup and Asia-Oceania Championship held in Beijing. Apart from this, he achieved sixth place in the 2025 World Championship held in Cairo. On the basis of his national record and international performance, Jhandu Kumar has been selected in the Indian team for the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. He has lifted up to 210 kg in training and his coach expects a good performance from him.
