This controversy triggered a digital movement titled “Argentina Out,” a campaign calling for the disqualification of La Albiceleste in the name of fair play.
The campaign’s reach has been extraordinary, amassing over 23.3 million signatures. With that figure, the petition is now close to surpassing the all-time record of 24 million signatures achieved in 1997 by the “Jubilee 2000” initiative.
Despite the enormous momentum behind this online effort, FIFA did not issue any response to the petitioners’ demands. Following Spain’s triumph in the final, the organisers of the campaign concluded their message with a touch of irony: “FIFA ignored us, but Spain kept its promises. Thank you, Spain.”
