The current Nissan Leaf has earned a reputation for offering an appealing mix of affordability, driving range, and overall value. However, performance has never been its strong suit. Still, Nissan has chosen to cater to driving enthusiasts by introducing a Nismo version of its practical electric hatchback, aimed at those who enjoy spirited driving or an occasional track day.

For fans expecting a high-performance, tri-motor setup that could rival the power of a GT-R, the new Leaf Nismo may come as a surprise — it delivers the same output as the standard Leaf. That said, this isn’t merely a cosmetic package. Nissan has fitted the Leaf Nismo with exclusive suspension components, including model-specific springs and stabilizer bars, along with what the company describes as “selected” member bushes. The car also rides on 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tyres, swapping out the usual efficiency-oriented rubber for a notable boost in grip and handling stability.

Although the power figures remain unchanged, Nissan has introduced an updated driving mode — renamed Nismo mode — that promises “powerful, linear acceleration unique to an electric motor vehicle.” This tuning aims to give the car a sportier, more responsive driving character compared to the regular Leaf. Unlike some other performance-oriented EVs, Nissan’s approach doesn’t attempt to recreate the feel of an internal combustion engine. There are no simulated gear changes or artificial engine sounds, keeping the driving experience authentically electric.

Unfortunately for enthusiasts outside Japan, particularly in the United States, Nissan has confirmed that the Leaf Nismo will be sold exclusively in its home market. Japanese customers will be able to choose between two variants producing 215 hp and 174 hp respectively. The entry-level B5 version is priced at the equivalent of approximately $40,471, while the top-spec model equipped with Recaro seats is expected to cost around $44,307 in U.S. currency.
